Barrow on Humber which is three miles from Barton upon
Humber. There is an active Anglican Church along with Nursing, Residential
and Psychiatric Homes as well as a Primary School in this predominantly
residential, rural village. A significant number of new homes have
been built in Barrow over recent years. The Methodist Church was rebuilt
in
the mid nineteenth century and can accommodate some three hundred
person on two floors. There is a Sunday School building within the
Church boundary
and is used by the community for such things as parties and the Parish
Council Meetings. The age of the building ensures that there is a
continued need for on-going maintenance.
There is a reasonable attendance at each of the two Sunday Services
and the Sunday School has a regular attendance. There is also a Shell
Group attached
to the Church. The Women's Fellowship meets on alternate weeks. The Circuit
Youth Fellowship meets at Barrow and the enthusiastic members are actively
involved with MAYC activities, doing particularly well in the sporting
events. The Youth Fellowship are a key element of the Circuit Education
and Youth Committee
and this includes the organisation of an annual ecumenical open air service
at Thornton Abbey in its annual programme. Barrow on Humber has been designated
as a development village by the local authority and it has seen a quite
rapid growth over the past few years, and whilst there is a history
of a close and
caring society, there is current concern that the progression is towards
being a dormitory where the new residents have little interest in
the community.
The Methodist Church is offering a warm welcome to the new residents and
there is potential for outreach into the community. There is a very close
working
relationship with the Anglicans of this village and the Benefice of which
it is a part. Regular meetings take place to plan events such as the 'Share
Jesus
Mission' held in August of 2001.
