"Trusting
in God's grace and strength,
we seek to know Christ and to make him known,
through worship and fellowship,
through prayer and service,
through caring and sharing with others."

The ancient settlement of Barton upon Humber can be traced
back to prehistoric times, with Neolithic and Bronze Age Man leaving
evidence of their existence. The tower of the Church of St Peter, built
a thousand years ago, has many features to attract the historians.
The first record of regular Methodist preaching in Barton dates from
1796, and although the first Chapel was built in 1816, the current
Chapel was built in 1861. The circuit key church with one hundred and
thirty-eight members is housed in large premises, which are extensively
used by various community groups. Subsequent development to the Chapel
resulted in a number of rooms of varying sizes being added. Today we
have a galleried Church that can seat almost a thousand people, and
a suite of other rooms, which are widely used by various community
groups for meetings and assemblies in this town of some ten thousand
inhabitants. The building are listed and have had a lot of work done
on them with help from English Heritage and the generous giving of
our members and friends. There is an on going scheme, which includes
the provision of disabled toilets.
Ther
is currently only one Service each Sunday with an average congregation
of seventy as well as an active Sunday School. The monthly family
service is proving to be very popular. The age of the members of
the congregation progresses from twenty-five to ninety-four. Coffee
and biscuits are served following morning worship to extend the fellowship
from the service. In addition to Sunday worship, there is a Bible
fellowship group meeting during a week; a twice-monthly meeting Sisterhood
meeting for ladies (tending towards those over sixty); a twice-monthly
meeting of Trinity Friends (a younger ladies group). The Church Council
has committees with responsibilities for Finance and Property and
Pastoral Matters. There is a regular mid-week service, which uses
modern hymns/praise songs and music. In addition to the Methodist
Church in the town, there are other Churches covering the needs of
Anglicans, Roman Catholics, Evangelicals and Salvationists. A Share
Jesus team visited the Christians Together in Barton in August 2001
and progressed the outreach of our Christian Community as well as
our togetherness. Celebration Singers are an ecumenical group who
have joined together to present Christian Musicals such as Snakes & Ladders
and Hopes & Dreams. On the first Sunday of each month an ecumenical
Prayer Breakfast is held.
