Rev. Richard Watson Richard Watson was born in Barton 22nd February 1781, in a Small house at the corner of the Butchery and the Market Place. The Parish Register shows that Richard, son of Thomas and Ann Watson was baptized in the parish of St. Peter's on the 5th March 1781. As Missionary Secretary, Watson was an eloquent advocate of foreign missions. Although for a time he left the Wesleyans under suspicion of heresey and joined the Methodist New Connexion his Theological institutes (1829) was the most influential book in Wesleyan Methodism for half a century. He also wrote a life of Wesley and was eleected President of the Conference in 1826.
